At 18.02 hours on 18 Nov 1940 the unescorted Congonian (Master George Washington Irvin) was hit in the engine room by one stern torpedo from U-65 west-southwest of Freetown and sank after being hit aft by a coup de grâce at 18.12 hours. One crew member was lost. The master and 34 crew members were picked up by HMS Devonshire (39) (Capt R.D. Oliver, DSC, RN) and landed at Freetown on 29 November.
