The Tugboat Rio Pardo, formerly Itajaí, was the fifth ship to bear this name in the Brazilian Navy, in honor of this river in Rio Grande do Sul. She was built by the Geestermünde shipyard in Bremerhaven, Germany in 1908. She was incorporated in 1909, when she lost her initial name. In 1938 On October 17, by Notice No. 1524, she was renamed Minesweeper Itajaí, being the second ship to bear this name in the Brazilian Navy in honor of this port city in Santa Catarina. On the same occasion, she was incorporated into the Flotilla of Mining Ships, or Flotilla "João das Botas". During World War II, she participated in the Local Defense of the port of Rio de Janeiro.
