They entered service in 1929 and were based at first on the China Station. Bridgewater was moved to the Cape in 1935, she active in the Battle of the Atlantic, Bridgewater being based at Freetowncarrying out patrols and escorting convoys until November 1943, when she moved to cover theWestern Approaches. For the last two years of the war she was used in submarine training activities.
After the war, Bridgewater was used for static bomb trials during 1946 and 1947, until being sold and broken up in May 1947.
In the south Atlantic HMS Bridgewater in company with HMS Boadicea H 65 rescued the master, 101 crew members, eight gunners and 112 passengers from British merchant Incomati sunk 18/Jul/43 by U-508 in pos. 03º 09’N 04º 08’E. Survivors were landed at Takoradi.

On 18/May 41 HMS Bridgewater rescues the master, 62 crew members and two gunners from British merchant Piako sunk by U-107 in pos. 07º 52’N 14º 57’W and landed them at Freetown.
