HMS Arran Saw active service in the south Atlantic while based at Freetown, Sierra Leone where the Royal Navy deployed more than 100 ships. In 1 May 1943 HMS Arran took part along with HMS Birdlip in the rescue of 97 crewmembers of the British Merchant City of Singapore sunk by U-515 in convoy TS-37 pos. 07º 55’N 14º 16’W.
In the same day of the sinking of City of Singapore HMS Arran rescued the master, 126 crew members, seven gunners and two naval signalmen of another British Merchant Clan MacPherson in pos. 07º 18’ S 14º 14’W and landed them at Freetown the same day.
In 24 Dec 43 HMS Arran rescued the master, 107 crew members, seven gunners and 15 RAF personnel from HMS Dumana sunk that same day by U-515 in pos 04º 27’N 06º 58’W. they landed at Takoradi the following day.
