At 04.10 hours on 30 Sep, 1942, the unescorted Alipore (Master Ernest Lee) was torpedoed and sunk by gunfire by U-516 northeast of Georgetown, British Guiana. Ten crew members were lost. The master, 68 crew members and four gunners in the lifeboats were taken in tow by the fishing schooner United Eagle of Georgetown where they landed.
