At 15.46 hours on 19 September 1942 the unescorted Quebec City (Master William Caradoc Thomas) was hit by one torpedo from U-156 north-northwest of the Ascension Island. Four crew members were lost. They were interrogated by U boat captain that gave them provisions and a course for nearest land. In two lifeboats which became separated, each making their own way East. One lifeboat was spotted and rescued by one British destroyer. After 14 days of journey the other lifeboat with the captain washed ashore at one fishing village at Cape Palmas, Liberia.
