At 09.38 hours on 1 Oct, 1942, the unescorted Empire Tennyson (Master Alfred Ernest Wright) was torpedoed and sunk by U-175 southeast of Trinidad. U-175 erroneously reported the ship as Tennessee. Four crew members were lost. The master, 29 crew members and six gunners were picked up by the American gunboat USS PG-58 and landed at Port of Spain, Trinidad.
