On 31 March survivors were spotted by one RAF Sunderland. They were rowing toward the African coast for two days. The master once the Sunderland overflew the boat having assurance they would be rescued, gave the men extra water. Six hours later HMS Wastwater fished out all men aboard when they took notice with sadness that the Sunderland trying to direct the the British ship toward the boats, had crashed killing six of the crew but the information on the location of the survivors was told by one of the three survivors from the Sunderland crew.
