Armament: 8 x 6in Mk VII (8 x 1), and 2 x 3in AA guns (2 x 1)


History:

17/9/1939 requisitioned by the Admiralty while at Colombo and sailed immediately to Calcutta for conversion to an armed merchant cruiser. 


20/12/1939 Commissioned and started service on the East Indies Station on convoy escort duties. November 1941 Operation Bellringer, part of Force F ( Devonshire, Colombo, Carnarvon Castle and Carthage), to intercept a Vichy French Convoy Southwest of Madagascar. She had to tow the Cap Padran to Port Elizabeth as her crew had sabotaged the engines before boarding. 


March-April 1942 Eastern Fleet (Indian Ocean)


April-July 1942 refit at Southampton which was prolonged due to a serious fire in No. 4 hold.


September-November 1942 South Atlantic Station


December-February 1943 Eastern Fleet (Indian Ocean)


March-April 1943 South Atlantic Station


May-October 1943 Eastern Fleet (Indian Ocean)


29/10/1943 decommissioned at Swansea and then sailed to Norfolk, Virginia for conversion to a troopship. 


30/12/1943 conversion completed and operated from Calcutta. 


27/2/1947 returned and refitted by builders. Single forward funnel lengthened, and painted white with buff funnel. 


06/7/1948 resumed Far East service, now terminating at Hong Kong. 


13/2/1961 arrived at King George V Dock and sold to Mitsui Bussan Kaisha, Osaka, for scrap and a last cargo voyage as Carthage Maru 


28/2/1961 sailed from London. 


15/6/1961 demolition began by Miyachi Salvage Co. Ltd., at Sakai, Japan.
