On 1 Aug 44 DE 175 Pennewill was decommissioned at Natal and recommissioned the same day in the Brazilian Navy and renamed Bertioga D 21. Between 9 and 20 February, participated in the convoy JW-65, along with the CTE Benevente - Be 6, being the 6th Brazilian escort only. In April, under the command of the Strike Group 27.6.8, along with the CTE Babitonga - Be 7 and CS's Grajaú - Guajará 7 and G - G 5 patrolled a wide area on the northeast coast in search of two suspects submarines.
