On 18 May 1942 Tugboat Muniz Freire suspended from Rio de Janeiro outbound to Fortaleza with a call at Recife from where she sailed on 12 May with the task of providing assistance to Brazilian merchant Comandante Lira which fell victim to the Italian submarine Barbarigo's torpedoes off Cape San Roque. Muniz Freire along with other Brazilian Tugboat Heitor Perdigão and seaplane tender AVP 23 USS Thrush  helped Comandante Lira to be towed to Mucuripe harbor at Fortaleza, arriving there on 31 May 42.
