Machinery: 4 GM Mod. 16-278A diesel engines with electric drive, 6000 shp, 2 screws.


Speed: 21 knots.


Range: 10,800 nm @ 12 knots.


Crew: 15 / 201.


DE 100 Christopher sailed from Philadelphia 25 December 1943 for duty off Brazil and to Trinidadon training exercises' in convoys' and screening cruisers during their shakedown and training periods. Between 16 January and 11 February, she sailed off Montevideo, screening the British cable ship Cambria as she repaired broken cables.



Similar duty continued until) Christopher was decommissioned at Natal 19 December 1944, and loaned to Brazil under lend-lease. She was renamed Benevente in Brazilian service. On 30 June 1953, when the loan ended, she was stricken from the U.S Navy List and transferred to Brazil under  the Mutual Assistance Program.   In the picture above, USS Christopher is moored at the quayside at Natal during the ceremony transferring to the Brazilian Navy sided by USS Herzog. 19 Dec 1944
