At 03.24 hours on 9 Aug, 1942, the San Emiliano (Master James Wilfred Tozer), dispersed from convoy E-7, was hit by one of two torpedoes from U-155 about 450 miles west of Trinidad and sank in flames after breaking in two. The U-boat had to avoid the flames on the water surface by diving. The master, 35 crew members and four gunners were lost. Eight crew members were picked up by a US Army transport and landed at Paramaribo, Dutch Guyana. The apprentice Donald Owen Clarke was posthumously awarded the George Cross and the chief radio officer D.W. Dennis was awarded posthumously the George Medal, both for their outstanding bravery.
