At 02.33 hours on 5 Sep 1942 the Myrmidon (Master Alexander Mann Caird) was torpedoed and sunk by U-506 southeast of Cape Palmas, while escorted by HMS Brilliant (H 84) (LtCdr A.G. Poe, RN) and the British boom defence vessel HMS Fernmoor (Z 208) (LtCdr C.J. Linder). The master, 105 crew members, ten gunners and 129 passengers were picked up by the destroyer and landed at Pointe Noire, French Congo.
