At 01.08 hours on 8 Jun, 1941, the unescorted Kingston Hill (Master William Edwin Niven) was torpedoed and sunk by U-38 southwest of the Cape Verde Islands. The master and 13 crew members were lost. 16 crew members were picked up by the British destroyer HMS Achates (H 12) (LtCdr Viscount Jocelyn) and landed at Greenock. 26 crew members and six gunners were picked up by the American tanker Alabama and landed at Capetown.
