At 21.43 hours on 2 Nov 1942 the unescorted Llandilo (Master William Redvers Baden Burgess) was torpedoed and sunk by U-172 southeast of St.Helena. The master, 20 crew members and three gunners were lost. The survivors in a leaking lifeboat were invited to take refuge on the deck of U-172 while the Germans repaired the boat and helped the men to bail it out. 17 crew members and three gunners were picked up by the Norwegian merchant Olaf Bergh and landed at Port of Spain, Trinidad.
