Sunk 13 MAR 42 by U-68 when in convoy on pos. 04º 10’N 08º 00’W
1 Dead
38 Survivors
At 13.26 hours on 17 March 1942 the unescorted Scottish Prince (Master William Raymond Milner Hill) was hit amidships by one of two torpedoes from U-68 about 180 miles west of Takoradi. The ship caught fire and sank slowly after being shelled by the U-boat. One crew member was lost. The master, 34 crew members and three gunners made landfall at Cape Palmas, which was visible some thirteen miles from the ship.
On the way they met a fishing boat which guided them in to a safe landing on the beach near Cape Palmas, Ivory Coast. Survivors remained at Firestone Tyre Company guest house with those from Ile de Batz and Baluchistan and were brought to Freetown by HMCS Weyburn (K 173) (Lt Thomas M.W. Golby).
