At 13.26 hours on 17 March 1942 the unescorted Scottish Prince (Master William Raymond Milner Hill) was hit amidships by one of two torpedoes from U-68 about 180 miles west of Takoradi. The ship caught fire and sank slowly after being shelled by the U-boat. One crew member was lost. The master, 34 crew members and three gunners were made landfall at Cape Palmas, Ivory Coast and were brought to Freetown by HMCS Weyburn (K 173) (Lt Thomas M.W. Golby).
