In December 1939 HMS Decoy was nominated for transfer to Freetown for convoy defence and interception of the German raiders. In January 1940 she was detached for duty in Atlantic and took passage to Freetown remained there until April. In September 1942 returned from duties in the Pacific with a new assignment at Freetown via Cape of Good Hope.


Operating in the South Atlantic, she picked up 41 survivors of the British merchantman Quebec City, which was torpedoed and sunk by the  U-156 on 19 September 1942 north-northwest of the Ascension Island.


Tansferred to Royal Canadian Navy April 1943, renamed Kootenay.
